A good western to read in a couple days. Sure didn't like the ending though. Kinda left you up in the air.

Roping Lions in the Grand Canyon Zane Grey 9781163073711 Books Reviews

I had this book given to me by a relative when I was still in grade school and had harbored fond memories of it as an exciting read. That is until one day in a rush of nostalgia, I decided I'd like to read it again at my now-advanced age and located it here on (my original copy got away, along with my baseball cards, years ago).

How the world has changed! I'm a hunter and anything but an anthopomorphologist, but both Grey and his characters are hell on animals, using with abandon practices we would not as a society or a government tolerate today. It's rare that I do not finish reading a book. Once in a while, I just can't seem to get into one and bale on it early on, but not often. But I did not make it to the end of this one - I was just too disgusted with the treatment of animals that this story portrays.

If you're an adult, read this book if you want to, but don't in any case, provide it to a kid. It's just too rough.
Roping Lions in the Grand Canyon is Zane Grey's telling of his first adventure out west with Buffalo Jones in 1907 and the antecedent of the book, The Young Lion Hunter, which was fiction; this one is fact and uses information Zane Grey had written in The Last of the Plainsmen, the true story of Buffalo Jones. This book was dedicated to the Boy Scouts of America and ZG writes, "I am hoping that it may influence boys to a keener love and appreciation of all the wonderful outdoors of their native land." In this book you will find not only Buffalo Jones but the many other westerners who influenced ZG and instilled in him the "code of the west". The lion dog, Don, also plays an important role in this book. What a wonderful inspiration this book is to all of us who have grown up in a time in which we can still relate to what ZG is writing about. Perhaps if these books were made available in school libraries today, our world would be a much better place to live--they instill values still needed to today.

And this Walter J Black edition would be a fine one to play in a library as it will last through repeated readings.
I am looking at my G & D edition of this book as I write this review. I have had it for more than 30 years. Orange cover with black lettering and a mountain lion screaming as it looks over a canyon ledge. In side the fronstpiece are two pictures of one of the cats they captured, Billy; and it is illustrated with many photographs which Zane Grey took himself. I like Zane Grey, and I liked the book, even though it was written for young people, it was exciting and very interesting.
